Meet Dr. Tommy Z

As Founder and Chief Building Scientist of Zakrzewski Architectural Engineering, LLC (ZAE), Dr. Tommy Zakrzewski focuses on the scientific aspects of building design, construction and performance. He is a premier expert in Building Engineering Physics and specializes in detailed, physics-based simulations of building energy consumption and demand.

He provides scientific expertise to design and construction teams to ensure buildings are optimized for performance while working with various stakeholders, including architects, engineers, contractors, and clients, to achieve common Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. In terms of research and development, he advances research into new building materials, technologies, and construction techniques with advanced building energy modeling (BEM) software and tools.

Dr. Tommy Z leads in education and training by sharing expertise with others in the industry through training, publications, as an Adjunct Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University and as an Energy Code Research and Training Specialist with EnergySense Resilience Center, an applied research center at the University of Illinois System.

He is a member of the LEED Energy & Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group, playing a big part in recommending technical solutions to rating system development and maintenance issues. He also serves as a board member of IBPSA-USA, where he leads conversations about how building energy modeling serves as a critical tool in climate action.
